Ten fun facts about Cambodia

Fact 1
This country is officially called the Kingdom of Cambodia. The capital is Phnom Pehn.

The climate is tropical with a rainy monsoon season from May to November and a dry season from December to April.

The biggest source of income has been the textile industry. The second largest source is tourism.

The official language is Khmer which is part of the Mon-Khmer language family. The written script is called ‘abugida’. The other languages spoke are French, Vietnamese and English.

Cambodia has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. The country lost 25,000 square kilometers of forest between 1990 and 2005.

The population of Cambodia comprises of 90% ethnic Khmer or Theravada Buddhists. 5% are Vietnames, 1% Chinese and 4% other. Due to the massacres of the Khmer Rouge era, Cambodia has a very young population.

The exports are clothing, timber, rubber, rice, fish, tobacco and footwear. Cambodia imports cigarettes, petroleum products, gold, machinery, construction materials, motor vehicles and pharmaceutical products.

The natural resources include oil and gas, gemstones, timber, iron order, phosphates, manganese and hydropower potential.

Fact 9
Cambodia uses US currency for the US bills and the change is tendered in Riels.

Fact 10
The Cambodian river Tonle Sap reverses its flow annually and it is the only river in the world to do so.
