Chisinau is the capital of Moldova and the main industrial and commercial center of the country.

Moldova gained independence on 27th August 1991 and is currently a new member of Europe after being controlled under the Soviet Union since the year 1940. It is one of the poorest countries in Europe despite recent progress from its small economic base.

The exports are textiles, agricultural machinery, foundry equipment, refrigerators, freezers and foodstuffs. Moldova imports chemicals, textiles, machinery and equipment and mineral products and fuel.

The natural resources are lignite, gypsum, phosphorites, arable land and limestone. The economy is mainly agricultural. Vegetables, fruits, wine, grain and beef are grown here.
