The Malay name of the country is Negara Brunei Darussalam, which means ‘Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace’. Brunei is the most observant Islamic nation in Southeast Asia.

The capital city is Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei has a high literacy rate of almost 92.7% of the population.

Brunei gained independence from Great Britain only on February 23, 1984. The currency used in Brunei is the Brunei dollar (BND).

The Sultan of Brunei is ranked amongst wealthiest people in the world. He lives in a palace with more than 500 rooms and has a collection of more than 500 luxury cars.

Crude oil and natural gas account for around 50% of the GDP and more than 90% of the exports from Brunei.

Brunei exports crude oil, natural gas and garments. The country imports machinery and transport equipment, manufactured goods, food and chemicals.

In this strictly Muslim country, selling alcohol and drinking in public are strictly banned with very stringent penalties if you are found indulging in either.
