Ten fun facts about North Korea

Fact 1
The official name of the country is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). North Korea has the fifth largest military force in the world and the literacy rate is over 99%.

Fact 2
North Korea has no single ‘head of state.’ Their only leader was and will continue to be Kim il-sung even after his death. The control of the nation is given to the head of the government, the head of the military and the chairman of the presidium of the supreme people’s assembly.

Fact 3
North and South Korea fought the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. They are still officially at war with each other as a peace treaty has never been signed.

Fact 4
The mandated government rule in North Korea is to rescue the portrait of Kil il-sung in the event of a floor, fire or earthquake. The first year in their calendar year is 1912 which was the year their great leader was born.

Fact 5
Female traffic police oversee the crossroads and traffic lights are rarely used due to lack of power.

Fact 6
Christians are heavily persecuted in North Korea.

Fact 7
The government authorizes the people to have short hair and only a handful number of hairstyles.

Fact 8
No dogs are allowed in the capital city of Pyongyang – not even pet dogs.

Fact 9
The radio programs announce government propaganda which cannot be shut off.

There is a ban on internet and cell phones in North Korea. The people who have access to internet can only visit government authorized sites
