Ten fun facts about Bulgaria


Fact 1
The very first electronic computer, car air bag and the digital watch were all invented by Bulgarians.

Fact 2
The Lactobacillus Bulgaris bacterium is what lends Bulgarian yoghurt its unique consistency and flavor. It survives only in Bulgarian air and the people of the country attribute their long life to this yoghurt that they regularly consume.

Fact 3
The Rila monastery in the Rila mountains houses the world-famous Rafail’s Cross. A monk took 12 long years to carve this cross (18X43cms) out of a single piece of wood which is adorned with over 1,500 minute figurines. The largest is as small as a grain of rice.


Fact 4
Bulgaria is included in the European Union but uses its very own currency called the “lev” instead of the euro.

Fact 5
The Golden Sands resort in Bulgaria has an impressive replica of the Eiffel Tower.

Fact 6
The country is home to Europe’s hottest spring which is Separeva Banya village. The water is as hot as 103.8 degrees centigrade.

Fact 7
People do things little differently in this country. They nod when they mean “no” and shake their heads when they want to say “yes”.

Fact 8
Bulgaria’s last lion was killed during the campaign launched by Xerxes the Persian king. In 1941 the last lynx in the country was shot down in the Rila Mountains.

Fact 9
In 1936, Europe’s largest bear was shot down near the Brevets resort in the Rila Mountains.

Fact 10
The Black Sea capes of Masslen and Kaliakra were home to the Black Sea Seal which is one of the rarest animal species on earth. Only 5-6 of these seals are alive today.
