He became the first supreme commander of NATO in 1951.

After World War II, Eisenhower was the Army Chief of Staff under President Harry S. Truman, and he then took the post of President at Columbia University.

Dwight Eisenhower contested in the 1952 presidential elections as a Republican to oppose the nonintervention of Senator Robert A. Taft and to campaign against "Communism, Korea and corruption" and he won by a landslide.

In the first year of his presidency, he overthrew the leader of Iran in the Iranian coup d'état in 1953 and used nuclear threats to close the Korean War.

Among his many innovations are the Interstate Highway System, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
