She was born in Kirksville, Missouri on November the 22nd of 1924.
She was the daughter of Leon Page who wrote Practical anatomy in 1925. Her father was on the staff of the Andrew Taylor Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery when she was born.
She graduated from Englewood High School in Chicago before attending the Goodman School of Drama and Then later going on to Uta Hagen in New York.
She was married to Alexander Schneider for three years. Schneider was a violinist.
In 1963 she married Rip Torn who she remained married to until her demise in 1987.
She and Rip Torn had three children together. They had one daughter and a set of twin boys.
She suffered from kidney disease and she died of a heart attack in 1987.
At the time of her death she was working on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre. When she missed two performances they sent someone to see what was wrong and announced she was dead.
The Neil Simon Theater was filled with friends and relatives who went to pay tribute to this great woman. Sissy Spacek, Amanda Plummer and James Earl Jones were some of the famous names in attendance.
She was nominated several times for Academy awards for best supporting actress.
