Ten fun facts about Saint Lucia


Fact 1
Santa Lucia is a volcanic island and one of the most mountainous islands in the whole of the Caribbean.

The highest point is Mount Gimie 950m. The Pitons Gros Piton and petit Piton are twin volcanic peaks and monuments that have made St. Lucia famous.

Santa Lucia is a Roman Catholic state with nearly two thirds the population being Catholics. Approximately 85% of St. Lucians are of pure African descent.

It proclaimed its independence from the British Commonwealth on February 22, 1979. Santa Lucia continues to be a current member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The main exports are bananas and coconuts clothing vegetables cocoa. Santa Lucia also has a strong tourism and fishing industry that adds strength to their economy.

It is mainly a venue for tourists and offers great water sporting activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling.

The capital city of St. Lucia is Castries is located in a flood gut region and this has been built on a reclaimed land mass.

The National bird is the St. Lucia parrot (Jacquot). The scientific name for this bird is Amazona Versicolor.
