Ten fun facts about Prafulla Chandra Ray


Fact 1
He is honored by a Chemical Landmark Plaque outside of Europe, set up by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Fact 2
Though he was admitted to the Hare School, in 1874 he contracted dysentery and had to put off school for a couple of years.

Fact 3
He did not receive his B.A. but was still accepted into Edinburgh University and awarded the Gilchrist Prize Scholarship in 1882.


Fact 4
He received several honorary degrees but received his D.Sc at Edinburgh University in 1887.

Fact 5
His donations helped establish the Nagarjuna Prize, an award for the best work in chemistry, and helped the welfare of the Brahmo Girls' School.

Fact 6
He also formed the Bengal Relief Committee, which raised money for the homeless people left from the Northern Bengal flood in 1923.

Fact 7
In 1924, he formed a new school called the Indian School of Chemistry.

Fact 8
He became an temporary Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the Presidency College, Calcutta in 1889.

Fact 9
In 1921, he made a donation of his entire salary to the Calcutta University for research and the development of the Department of Chemistry in the University College of Science.

Fact 10
One of his more popular published pieces, from 1902, is "A History of Hindu Chemistry from the Earliest Times to the Middle of the Sixteenth Century".
