He moved to Vancouver as a ten year old when his father (a former sergeant in the Canadian army) retired and it was here that he first became interested in acting.

He first starred on a Canadian TV series called “Leo and Me” when he was fifteen, able to play a ten year old because of his young looks and short stature.

Fact 6
He quit high school prior to his senior year to pursue acting and has since stated openly and publicly that he wishes that he had finished school first.

He moved to Los Angeles at the age of eighteen and had to survive on macaroni and cheese for some time because he was not able to land roles successfully until 1982 when he landed the role of Alex P Keaton on “Family Ties.”

Next he acted in a series of well loved 1980’s movies including “Teen Wolf,” “High School USA,” Poison Ivy,” and “Back to the Future.”

Fact 9
In 1991 while filming the famed “Doc Hollywood” he noticed that his finger was twitching and he could not control it which led to his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

Since his diagnosis and coming out to the public seven years later, Mike has raised awareness for the disease and continues to act when he can in small roles.
