As of January 2013, he has been the President of the British Humanist Association.

Although born in Baghdad to an Iraqi fater and an English mother, he made a permanent move to the U.K. in 1979.

He has also described himself as an atheist even with his Christian mother and Muslim father.

He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear reaction theory in 1989.

He was chosen as one of the 21 "Faces of UK Science" in the London's National Portrait Gallery exhibit in 2004.

Over 10 TV programs, many for the BBC, have been presented by him.

In 2007 he received the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for science communication.

He is a member of many groups including the Royal Society Equality and Diversity Panel as well as the British Council Science and Engineering Advisory Group.

To this day, he is still a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey.
