James Oliver Cromwell was born on January 27, 1940 in Las Angeles, California, USA. Although he was born in California, James was raised in New York where he attended the Middlebury College and Carnegie Tech.

His dad was film director John Cromwell who had studied at Carnegie-Mellon.

James first started in theater, as did both of his parents, where he acted in a number of different types of roles from Shakespeare to experimental and modern.

He first started in television after the theater work and was cast as Stretch Cunningham on the popular television series, “All in the Family.”

James Cromwell continues to enjoy working on stage and periodically returns to the theater to do a play or two.
