Fact 1
Sissy was born Mary Elizabeth Spacek in December 1949 in Quitman, Texas.

Fact 2
She shot to international stardom with her portrayal of Holly Sargis in the 1973 movie “Badlands”, which was directed by maverick director Terrence Malick.

Fact 3
Her first Academy award nomination was for her role as Carrie White in the 1976 horror movie Carrie. Based on a Stephen King novel, the movie was directed by Brian de Palma.


Fact 4
Other Oscar nominations she received were for her roles in “Crimes of the Heart”, “The River”, “In the Bedroom” and “Missing”.

Fact 5
She later went on to win the Best Actress Academy Award in 1980 for the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, where she played country music star Loretta Lynn.

Fact 6
Sissy moved to New York in order to pursue a career as a singer. When she first arrived she stayed with her cousin Rip Torn.

Fact 7
She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2011.

Fact 8
This performer has received numerous Screen Actors Guild Awards, Oscar nominations for best actress in a film, and Golden Globe awards. She also received many BAFTA awards during her career.

Fact 9
She recorded a song in 1968 entitled John you have gone too far this Time. The song was recorded under the name of Rainbo and the lyrics were aimed at the recent nude posing of John Lennon on his Two Virgins album cover.

Fact 10
The death of her brother Robbie who was just 18 when he died, affected her greatly and she has often called it the defining moment of her life.
