When designing the Italian flag, the Italians looked to the French flag for inspiration. This had been introduced to the country when Napoleon invaded the peninsula in 1797.

Sicily, which is an Italian island, is known over the world for being the base of the Mafia criminal organization.

The piano is an Italian invention. Bartolomeo Cristofori invented it in 1698 and it was originally known as the “piano et forte” which when translated into English means “soft and loud”.

Italy has made a substantial contribution to science. The electric battery, the barometer, wireless telegraphy and nitroglycerine are all Italian inventions.

The nuclear reactor was invented by an Italian named Enrico Fermi.
