Fact 1
The series stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a Central Intelligence Agency officer with bipolar disorder, and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper.

Fact 2
Mathison has come to believe that Brody, who was held captive by al-Qaeda as a prisoner of war, was “turned” by the enemy and now threatens the United States.

Although Carrie's condition was not specified during the show's first few episodes, the actor who plays her, Claire Danes said she decided that Carrie has Bipolar 1.

Gideon Raff created the original series in response to the many Israeli soldiers who had been enemy captives and their brutally difficult, and largely unreported, efforts to reintegrate into Israeli society after they returned home.
