Ten fun facts about Gregor Mendel


Fact 1
Even today the basic principles of laws of inheritances and how hereditary affects various generations are used in complicated genetic researches. Gregor Mendel was a major contributor to this theory.

Fact 2
Gregor Mendel was born on July 22, 1822 in Heizendorf, Austria which is now known as Hyncice, Czechoslovakia. His birth name was Johann Mendel but he took the name Gregor when he entered the abbey.

Fact 3
He studied mathematics, ethics, physics, philosophy and pedagogy at Olomouc University in 1841 before entering the monastery at Brno.


Fact 4
Mendel graduated from the University of Vienna where he studied from 1851 to 1853.

Fact 5
He studied the pea plant and conducted experiments on honeybee as he was interested in beekeeping as a child. He became famous for forecasting the weather as an accomplished meteorologist.

Fact 6
The Gregor Mendel Institute (GM) of Molecular Plant Biology, which was founded in 2000, was named after him.

Fact 7
Gregor Mendel provided 1500 guilders to establish a fire brigade for his home village of Hyncice. A memorial plaque was erected in his honor by the grateful villagers.

Fact 8
He died in 1884 at the age of 62.

Fact 9
Gregor Mendelís work was ignored until sixteen years after his death. His experimental notebooks were destroyed by the monks as they were not aware of the significance of his discoveries.

The theoretical ideals underpinning his work only began to the appreciated in 1900.
