The band’s name came from the song "The Sharp Hint of New Tears" which was in the band’s debut album The Swiss Army Romance.

The 2003 album, A Mark, a Mission, a Brand, a Scar, is so far the most commercially viable album of the band. It was the third album of Dashboard Confessional.

Dashboard Confessional’s 2004 song Vindicated was featured on the Spiderman 2 soundtrack and played during the film’s end credits. The song, which became popular, opened the band to wider audiences for their next release.
