Ten fun facts about Game of Thrones


Fact 1
It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones.

Fact 2
George R.R. Martin did not actually write any of the Dothraki language we hear in the TV series. HBO hired a company that specializes in creating imaginary languages.

Fact 3
In the year 2012, over 160 baby girls in the U.S. were legally named “Khaleesi”, after the character in the show, although it is not the character's name (Daenerys) but a title.

Game of Thrones is the most recent big-budget work to have contributed to the popularity of the fantasy genre in mainstream media.

Osha (Natalia Tena) was Tonks in Harry Potter.

Game of Thrones has obtained an exceptionally broad and active international fan base.

Maester Aemon Targaryen of the Night's Watch is revealed to be blind in the novels. He is played by Peter Vaughan, who is legally blind himself.

The show's costumes are inspired by many cultures, such as Japanese and Persian. Dothraki outfits resemble that of the Bedouins (one was made out of fish skins to resemble dragon scales), and the Wildlings wear fur side in and skin side out like the Inuit.

In 2012, Vulture ranked the series's fandom as the most devoted in popular culture, ahead of that of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Harry Potter or Star Wars.
