She is the seventh child or Ukrainian immigrants Mykhailo and Luba. Her mother taught school and her father was a computer systems analyst.
She was born and raised in Clifton, New Jersey. She attended a Ukrainian Catholic school in Newark, but as a young girl she and the rest of her family converted to Pentecostalism from the traditional Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
When she was growing up, she did not intend to be an actress. Instead, she dreamed of becoming an ophthalmologist.
