Ten fun facts about Vera Farmiga


Fact 1
She is the seventh child or Ukrainian immigrants Mykhailo and Luba. Her mother taught school and her father was a computer systems analyst.

Fact 2
She was born and raised in Clifton, New Jersey. She attended a Ukrainian Catholic school in Newark, but as a young girl she and the rest of her family converted to Pentecostalism from the traditional Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Fact 3
When she was growing up, she did not intend to be an actress. Instead, she dreamed of becoming an ophthalmologist.


Fact 4
She toured with a folk dancing ensemble made up of Ukrainians called Syzokryli when she was a schoolgirl.

Fact 5
The young actress studied her craft at Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Fact 6
She first appeared on Broadway as an understudy in a play called Taking Sides. This happened in 1996.

Fact 7
In 1997 she married Sebastian Roche whom she had met while they were filming Roar. Tragically the union was short lived and they dissolved the marriage in 2004.

Fact 8
In 2008 she married Renn Hawkey. Renn is a former band member and works as a carpenter.

Fact 9
The couple gave birth to a son they named Fynn in January of 2009. The next year they had a daughter they named Gytta Lubov in November.

Fact 10
Farmiga’s sister Taissa Farmiga is also an actress.
