The capital and largest city of Suriname is Paramaribo which is located on the banks of Suriname River. The historic inner city of Paramaribo was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

The official currency of Suriname is the Suriname dollar.

Football is the major sport played in this country. Some of the famous Dutch footballers including Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Nigel de Jong are of Surinamese descent.

The largest ethnic group is the Hindustani, followed by Creole communities, Javanese, Maroons and Amerindians.

The official language of Suriname is Dutch. The other regional languages are Sranan Tongo, Hindi, Bhojpuri, English, Sarnami, Javanese, Hakka and Malay.

Suriname is the only country in South America where Dutch is so widely spoken and the only South American country where Dutch is the official language.

Tropical rainforests make up around 80% of the landscape of Suriname. The highest point is Juliana Top at 1,230 m. It is very rich in flora and fauna.

Suriname experiences a tropical environment moderated with strong winds. It is a very hot and humid tropical country as it is located near the equator.

Suriname gained independence from the Dutch government o November 25, 1975.

The main economy of Suriname is the bauxite industry apart from commerce. Their main trade partners are Netherlands, United States and Canada and Caribbean countries.
