He was born into a Jewish family but later became an agnostic.

In 1881, he became a United States citizen. He had moved there in 1870 to avoid being drafted in Germany.

His first improved telephone transmitter invention was acquired by Bell Telephone Company. The patent was declared void by the United State Court of Appeal.

He also developed a loom, acoustic tile and beginning version of the helicopter.

He was awarded the Franklin Institute's John Scott Medal in 1897.

His son founded the Berliner Aircraft Company in 1914.

He was prevented from selling his early gramophones in the United States after arguments with the exclusive rights.
