Austria is bordered 8 countries on all sides. At the north are Germany and the Czech Republic, at the west are Liechtenstein and Switzerland, at the south Italy and Slovenia and at the east are Hungary and Slovakia.

The country’s flag is one of the world’s oldest national flags. It dates way back to 1191.

The Porsche company founder, Ferdinand Porsche was an Austrian and so was Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis.

The Vienna zoo was founded in 1752 and is the world’s oldest zoo.

In 1818, Josef Madersperger the Austrian, invented the sewing machine.

The world’s largest emerald which is 2860 carats is ensconced in Vienna’s Imperial Palace.

The very first postcards in the world were used in Austria.

The Central Cemetery in Vienna has more than 2.5 million tombs which is more than its 2013 population. Beethoven, Strauss, Brahms, Schoenberg and Schubert are just a few of the world-famous Austrians who are buried here.

The restaurant St. Peter Haslauer in Austria is the oldest restaurant/inn in the world. The restaurant was originally called the Stiftskeller, and was established in the year 803. It continues to be operational and is also Europe’s oldest company.

At 380 meters, the Krimmi waterfalls are Europe’s highest waterfalls.
